Cut a film¶
Cut is the film's own step — the Cut tab, after Day and Story (/cut, on a phone
/m/cut). Day's Ready to cut section and Story's Cut film → open it with their shots
picked.
| Part of the page | What it does |
|---|---|
| What's in it | Tick Day, Story or both — one film can mix the two |
| Watch the cut | The cut as it will come out, before anything is encoded — it updates a moment after each change |
| Timeline | Every shot as long as it plays: click to jump, drag a shot to move it, drag a still's edge to hold it, a clip's edges to trim it; drag on the ruler to scrub. Under the shots, the sound lane shows the music's waveform against the cut (and says when the track runs out early or runs over), the spoken lines and the narration. The round badge on each join picks how the next shot comes in — Cut, Crossfade, Fade through black, Flash of white or Slide (default: the Crossfade option) |
| Shots | One card per shot, with its picture and what happens in it — drag to reorder. + From Gallery adds any still or clip of this Cast, + Text card a line of words on black, Duplicate the shot under the playhead again, Split at playhead cuts a clip in two (each half its own trim). Added shots have Remove |
| Options | Shape, size, length, music, subtitles, titles — kept between visits |
| Versions | Save the edit under a name (a long cut, a 30 s one for Reels) and open it again |
| Your films | Every film of this Cast: re-cut in another shape, export for an editor, share |
After a cut: Watch on Cast, Start tomorrow on Day or Continue as a story.

The film saves to the Gallery and to the Cast as an episode.
Before it cuts¶
Cut checks every shot first (Checking the shots…): missing, black, a talking clip with no sound, or a still that missed its pose or face. Then choose Retry them first, Leave them out or Cut anyway.
Cut options¶
| Option | Choices |
|---|---|
| Shape | Widescreen 16:9 · Vertical 9:16 · Square 1:1 |
| Size | 720p · 1080p |
| Length | As the shots hold · Fit to the music · 15 / 30 / 60 s |
| Music | Upload, paste a link, or Score this film (an original track) |
| Levels | Music and Lines — the music ducks under speech |
| Look | Crossfade · Slow zoom on stills · Title & captions |
| Subtitles (on) | What is said in each talking clip — else the shot's narration — burned in at the bottom |
Shots¶
Each shot is a card with its still (or the clip's first frame — hover to play it), the beat and what is said. Drag a card by its ⠿ grip to move it (or ↑ ↓), untick to leave it out, edit its caption, hold a still longer, frame a still (waist up, chest up), trim a clip, pick the poster, set a still's move (push in, pull out, hold still) and a clip's sound (as recorded, louder, quieter, muted).
Sound¶
| Sound | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Lines | Talking clips — the Cast's voice |
| Narration | Each slot's (or Story scene's) Narration, recorded when the film is cut |
| Room sound | Under talking clips, and Add sound on silent ones |
| Music | Your track or Score this film |
Dub into another language¶
Day's Dub (beside Animate all) translates every line and reply with your LLM, then makes the talking clips again with the lines said in that language — lip-synced, like English. Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
- The translated lines show in each slot's Line — fix any wording there and Animate again.
- As written puts the original lines back.
Use a capable LLM
An 8B model translated well in testing; a 3B one changed the meaning of some lines.
After the cut¶
On the Cast page → Film & media → Films, under each film:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Re-cut | The same film at another shape (vertical, square, widescreen) or size |
| Export for an editor | A zip with FCPXML (Resolve, Final Cut), an EDL, subtitles and the clips |
| Share for review | A read-only link that expires — anyone can watch it without an account |
Note
These need a film cut in 2.6 or later (it keeps the recipe). For an older film, cut the Day again.
